Solo Travel Continues to Gain Popularity Across All Generations: Solo travel continues to grow in popularity, with Dertour reporting that nearly one in five winter trips in 2025/26 was booked by a solo traveler. The trend spans all age groups, from younger travelers seeking long distance adventures to older guests enjoying extended winter stays in sunny destinations like Thailand or the Canary Islands. Spain, Egypt and Turkey ranked among the most popular short and medium haul destinations, while Thailand and the Caribbean led on the long haul side. Based on the analysis of 100 major crises over the past four decades, the study found that destinations typically rebound stronger after shocks such as natural disasters, political unrest or pandemics, especially when supported by clear communication, financial aid, stable flight connectivity and diversified tourism strategies. European airports continue to grow despite Middle East tensions: Passenger traffic across Europe’s airports continued to rise in March 2026 despite the escalating conflict in the Middle East. GREECE: Greece Introduces Stricter Rules to Tackle Overtourism: Greece is introducing stricter tourism and construction regulations to better protect popular islands and coastal regions from the impact of overtourism. Following record visitor numbers in 2025, the government plans to limit hotel development in heavily visited destinations such as Santorini, Mykonos and Rhodes while also introducing stronger environmental protections for beaches and coastal areas. New rules will restrict the size of future hotel projects and tighten building regulations outside designated construction zones, with officials aiming to create a more sustainable tourism model that balances economic growth with the protection of local communities, infrastructure and natural landscapes. EGYPT: Egypt Becomes the Top Winter Destination for Dertour Travelers: Egypt has become the most popular short and medium haul winter destination among Dertour guests for the 2025/26 season, overtaking Spain after recording a 15 percent increase in visitor numbers. According to Dertour’s latest travel barometer, travelers were particularly drawn to Egypt’s reliable climate, short flight times and wide range of all inclusive resorts offering strong value for money. The study also showed that early bookings continue to rise, while travelers increasingly focus on comfort and price performance. On long haul routes, Thailand remained the leading destination, while Japan recorded the strongest growth with bookings more than doubling compared to the previous winter season. Read more.
CUBA: Direct Flights From Europe to Cuba Continue to Decline: Direct air connections between Europe and Cuba are becoming increasingly limited as several airlines suspend routes to the island. Following recent cancellations by Air France, Iberia and Turkish Airlines, Cubana has now also stopped its flights from Madrid to Havana and Santiago de Cuba with immediate effect. The reductions are mainly linked to ongoing fuel shortages in Havana as well as new US sanctions targeting companies doing business with Cuba. At the moment, Air Europa remains the only airline operating direct flights from Europe to Cuba, while travelers increasingly have to rely on connecting flights via destinations such as the Dominican Republic or Panama.
